Things To Do In Canmore In Winter #1: Cross-Country Skiing at Canmore Nordic Centre
Developed to host the 1988 Olympic Winter Games cross-country ski events, the Canmore Nordic Centre is a must-see. As one of the few operational Nordic Skiing venues in the world, people travel from all over to experience the extensive recreational ski trails. The Nordic Centre is a great place to visit whether you’re an experienced cross-country skier, or are new to the sport, as it offers both rentals and lessons. Located only five minutes away from Canmore’s town center, people from across Alberta, Canada and the world come to participate in and be spectators at world-class events that the Nordic Centre hosts.
Things To Do In Canmore In Winter #2: Enjoy Other Winter Sports Like Ice skating, Tobogganing and Snowshoeing
If cross-country skiing is not on the agenda for your trip, be sure to check out some of the other winter sports Canmore Nordic Centre offers, or winter activities within the community. The Centre offers skating, tobogganing, winter disc golf, and snowshoeing at its facility. Though, that’s not the only place people go skating and snowshoeing. Canmore sets the scene for winter fun within the community, where you can wild ice skate on frozen lakes. Be sure to follow the Town of Canmore’s guide to outdoor ice rinks, which includes locations open for skating and safety precautions.
Things To Do In Canmore In Winter #3: Experience Canmore Winter Hikes
Embark on a winter hike through the Grotto Canyon, located just ten minutes from the town of Canmore and Spring Creek Vacations. Starting at the Grotto Pond, travel along the narrow-walled Grotto Canyon trail to the glistening frozen waterfalls. Just before reaching the waterfall at the end of the trail, you can catch a glimpse of the Hopi pictographs, which were painted 500 to 1,000 years ago. As this path is roughly four kilometres and does not have a steep incline, it is a great activity for all ages.
One of Canmore’s best winter hikes is adventuring the Bow River Loop. This classic walk offers exceptional panoramic mountain views, illustrating the ultimate winter wonderland. Another science walk that’s fun for the whole family is the Three Sisters Pathway. Journey along the Bow River and take a stroll on the multi-use pathway that provides amazing views of the surrounding mountains.
